Gosaikunda Trekking unites the outlying & picturesque ‘Langtang Valley’, with the high mountain lakes ‘Gosaikunda’, at an altitude of 4,380m. The lake spreads across 34 acres, with the spectacular views of Mighty Langtang Lirung and other sky-high peaks on the backdrop. The lake melts and sips down to form the Trishuli River and remains frozen for six months during winter from October to June. Hence, ideally starting this trek from Trishuli River, north of Kathmandu, we travel through Dhunche to Syabru Bensi, a Sherpa village placed at the edge of “The Langtang National Park”. Passing along the dense oak & Rhododendron forests and even the glacial moraine at places, we make it to the popular Tamang village of Langtang.
We extend the trek by staying overnight at Kyanjin Gompa, a great place to try local yak cheese. Further up, we move through Nubamatang, settled in a hidden valley, on our way up to see the glaciers, which is also a gateway to Tibet. At this point, we reverse through Syabru and Sing Gompa to a high plateau, where the sacred lake of ‘Gosainkunda’ is placed. The Gosaikunda area has been delineated as a religious site. Hindu mythology attributes Gosaikunda as the abode of Hindu deities Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri. The Hindu scriptures Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana, and the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata refer to Samudra manthan, which is directly related to the origin of Gosaikunda. It's holy waters are considered of particular significance during Gangadashahara and the sacred thread festival Janai Purnima when thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the area. Gosaikunda is believed to have formed from the digging of the land by the Trishul (holy Trident) of lord Shiva.
Finally crossing the laurebina pass (4600m), we descend to Ghopte and end the trek upon reaching Sundarijal. Langtang Gosainkunda trek is one of the most strenuous treks in Langtang region, reaching at an altitude of 4300 meters. However, this trek is equally rewarding, that never fails to award you with picturesque tamang villages, awe-inspiring mountain views and a sneak peek into the local culture.

9th October, 2024
The trek was challenging, especially the ascent to the lake, but reaching Gosaikunda was incredibly rewarding. The scenery was worth every effort
