Home / Trekking Information/ Annapurna Trekking Season

Annapurna Trekking Season

The Annapurna trekking region also has two prime trekking seasons: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Both offer ideal weather conditions for trekking and panoramic mountain views.

Here’s a detailed overview:

1. Spring (March to May):

  • Weather: Mild temperatures, making it comfortable for trekking. The forests are full of blooming rhododendrons, adding vibrant colors to the trek.
  • Visibility: Generally clear skies in the morning, with occasional afternoon clouds. Views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare (Fishtail) are spectacular.
  • Crowds: Popular season with moderate to heavy trekking traffic, especially in the Annapurna Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit routes.
  • Temperature: Warm at lower altitudes but cool at higher elevations.

2. Autumn (September to November):

  • Weather: Clear, stable weather with crisp air, making it the best time for trekking. Days are warm and nights are cool.
  • Visibility: Excellent, with little to no haze. This is the most popular time to witness the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and surrounding peaks in all their glory.
  • Crowds: The busiest season for trekking, especially in October. You’ll find more trekkers and crowded teahouses, but the spectacular views make it worth it.
  • Temperature: Comfortable during the day but colder at higher elevations.

Other seasons:

  • Monsoon (June to August): Heavy rain, muddy and slippery trails, and leeches can make trekking more difficult. However, it’s a lush time with fewer trekkers. The rain shadow areas like Upper Mustang and Nar Phu are good alternatives during this time.
  • Winter (December to February): Cold and snow at higher altitudes, with many teahouses shutting down. Some passes like Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit may close due to snow. However, the skies are often clear, and the region is much quieter.

For most trekkers, the autumn season (particularly October and November) is the best time to trek in the Annapurna region due to stable weather and excellent visibility.
