Climbing Equipment Checklist

Whether you are climbing Island Peak, Mera Peak, Lobuche East, Chulu West, or another Himalayan peak, you need both normal trekking gear and specialized mountaineering equipment. The exact Nepal climbing equipment list depends on the peak, season, altitude, and route.

1. Technical Climbing Equipment

• Mountaineering boots — crampon-compatible, preferably B2/B3
• 12-point crampons
• Mountaineering ice axe, approximately 50–65 cm
• Climbing harness

• Belay/rappel device (ATC or figure-eight)

Peak-specific differences

The equipment requirements can change substantially between a relatively straightforward snow climb such as Mera Peak and a more technical fixed-rope climb such as Island Peak.

Rental in Kathmandu

If you do not own all the equipment, many climbing items can be rented in Kathmandu, particularly around Thamel. However, I recommend bringing or purchasing your own mountaineering boots, gloves, clothing and other fit-critical personal equipment whenever possible. Rental equipment should be carefully inspected before departure.
