Dolpo Jomsom Trekking at the remote corner of Trans-Himalayan region ‘Dolpo’ is a heavenly land in mid-western part of Nepal. Trekking in this region has been opened only recently for trekkers, so the cultural and natural beauty of this area remains uninfluenced by the outer-world. The main attraction of this region is ‘Shey-Phoksundo’ lake, the lovely lake is best known for its ever-changing water colors. The lake itself fall in the areas of ‘Shey-Phoksundo National Park’, the park is home to some of the most remarkable wildlife Nepal has to offer such as snow leopard, blue sheep and serow. Rodney Jackson, a great Naturalist conducted his research on snow leopards in Shey-Phoksundo area itself.
Apart from the natural beauty and wildlife experience, this trek through Dolpo-Jomsom is equally rewarding with great Tibetan cultural experiences. Legends state that Dolpo and Jomsom was discovered some 1700 years ago by Saint Guru Rimpoche, the one who spread Tibetan Buddhism across the Himalayas. Therefore, Dolpo and Jomsom is still a stronghold of the pre-buddhist, Bon po religion. Throughout this trek we acquaint ourselves with ancient monasteries, highland villages, Phoksundo Lake and the fabled Shey Gompa while also exploring the popular Thakali culture in Mustang.
