Mardi Himal peak climbing is the most southerly peak of the Annapurna range in Annapurna regionMardi Himal peak is the lowest and least climbed peak. The photograph of the Mardi Himal (in the foreground) was taken in 1953 by Baisl Good fellow and it drew the attention of western climbers. The first ascent of Mardi Himal was in 1961. The first route was via the east flank and it is the only one used so far.

Mardi Himal peak climb separates the southwest ridge of fishtail as a separate mass at right angles to the ridge and it is best seen from the south. The southwest face of the mountain has three well-defined ridges rising from rock buttresses and separated by hanging glaciers. Mardi Himal Trekking peak east face is separated from the fishtail ridge by a col at 5200m.

Best Season for Mardi Himal Peak Climbing

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the best times to climb Mardi Himal Peak. During these months, the weather is pretty stable. The skies are clear, the temperatures are mild, and you can see the Himalayan peaks very well. In the spring, the rhododendron forests are full of color and the grass is lush.

In the fall, the air is crisp, the weather is clear after the monsoon, and the views of the snow-capped peaks are breathtaking. Winter is not as good because of the snow, ice, and extreme cold. The monsoon season is also not as good because of the heavy rain, slippery trails, and leeches.

What Makes Mardi Himal Peak Climbing Special?

Mardi Himal Peak Climbing is special because:

  • It combines a less-crowded trekking route with the thrill of reaching the top of a Himalayan mountain.
  • Located in the Annapurna region, the peak offers panoramic views of Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, and Manaslu ranges
  • Unlike more popular peaks, Mardi Himal provides a sense of solitude and adventure, taking climbers through terraced farmlands, rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and high ridges before reaching the glacier and summit.
  • It is a uniquely rewarding climbing experience because it is off the beaten path and lets you meet Gurung and Magar people.

How Difficult is Mardi Himal Peak Climbing?

Mardi Himal is considered a moderately difficult trekking peak. It doesn’t require as much technical skill as some higher Himalayan climbs, but you do need to be in good shape, get used to the altitude, and know the basics of mountaineering. Climbers should know how to use crampons, ropes, and ice axes because the last part of the climb involves going over snowy ridges and glaciated ground. The main problems are the high altitude, the cold weather, and the long days of climbing. This is a great peak for people who want to get some experience climbing in the Himalayas without having to climb very technical or very high-altitude mountains.

Permits Required

To do Mardi Himal Peak Climbing, you will need these permits:

  • Mardi Himal Peak Climbing Permit issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for entering the protected region.
  • TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card for safety and record purposes.

Skyline Treks takes care of all of these permits for you before the trek starts, so you don’t have to worry at all.

Safety and Precautions

Safety should always be a priority while attempting Mardi Himal Peak Climbing. Key precautions include:

  • Get used to the altitude by going up slowly and taking breaks.
  • Drink plenty of water and stay away from alcohol while you climb.
  • Always do what your climbing leader and Sherpa team tell you to do.
  • Bring the right climbing gear, such as ropes, crampons, and helmets.
  • Be ready for the weather on the mountains to change quickly.
  • Bring a well-stocked first aid kit and medicine for altitude sickness.
  • Make sure your travel insurance covers climbing at high altitudes.

Training and Preparation

Getting ready is very important for Mardi Himal Peak Climbing. It’s best to have hiked at least 4,000 meters before. At least two to three months before you leave, you should start working out. Focus on cardio exercises like running, biking, and swimming, as well as endurance hikes with a heavy backpack, strength training, and flexibility workouts.

You will feel more confident if you learn basic mountaineering skills like how to use crampons, ropes, and ice axes. It’s just as important to get your mind ready, since climbers need to stay calm and focused when things get tough.

Mountain Views

The climb to Mardi Himal gives trekkers amazing views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Manaslu. The view of the south face of Annapurna and the famous fishtail-shaped Machhapuchhre from the top is amazing. The trek itself takes you through forests, rolling hills, and alpine meadows before opening up to huge views of the Himalayas.

Altitude Sickness and Prevention

Acclimatization is important because altitude sickness can happen above 3,000 m. Headache, nausea, dizziness, and trouble breathing are some of the symptoms. To prevent this:

  • Gradually rise and include days for getting used to the new height.
  • Stay hydrated and don’t drink alcohol or take sleeping pills.
  • To keep your energy up, eat healthy meals.
  • Recognize symptoms early and go down if they get worse.
  • If your doctor tells you to, bring altitude medicine like Diamox with you.

What to Expect During Mardi Himal Peak Climbing

Mardi Himal Peak Climbing is a mix of trekking and climbing. The lower trails go through cute villages, terraced fields, and rhododendron forests. They then go up to alpine meadows and rocky ridges. Expect colder weather, snow, and the need for technical climbing gear higher up.

There will be different places to stay, from teahouses along the trek to camping at Base Camp. You will also have cultural experiences with Gurung communities, warm hospitality, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas along the way.

Things You Should Know

  • The NMA says that Mardi Himal Peak is a trekking peak, not a technical expedition peak.
  •  At high altitudes, the weather can change quickly, so it’s important to be able to change your plans.
  •  Some teahouses may have electricity and Wi-Fi, but only up to a certain point.
  •  It is very important to get used to the new environment and drink enough water.
  •  Bring cash with you because ATMs and card machines aren’t available in remote areas.
  •  Be respectful of the people, their traditions, and the land.

Is Mardi Himal Peak Climbing for Me?

Mardi Himal Peak Climbing is for you if you are an adventurous person who is in good shape, has hiked before, and wants to try to reach the top of the Himalayas. It is easier than higher peaks, so beginners in mountaineering who want a challenge can do it.

But if you’re a complete beginner who has never been trekking at high altitudes before, it’s not a good idea. Mardi Himal Peak Climbing is a great choice if you want a shorter, less crowded climb in the Himalayas that will still be very rewarding.

Meals & Accommodation

You will stay in teahouses along the way that offer simple but comfortable places to sleep and eat. You can expect Nepali foods like dal bhat, noodles, and soups, as well as foods from other countries. At Base Camp, you’ll stay in tents and eat meals made by the support staff. You can stay warm and hydrated by drinking hot drinks like tea, coffee, and soup.

Day 1

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara

After breakfast, take a beautiful drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, which takes about 6 to 7 hours. The path goes along the Trishuli River on winding roads and through terraced fields, green hills, and small towns. With its laid-back vibe and stunning views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges, Pokhara, also known as the “City of Lakes,” is a great place to visit. When we get there, we go to the hotel to rest for the day, where we can relax or explore the lakeside area in the evening.

Accomodation: Hotel
Day 2

Drive from Pokhara to Mardi Pul and trek to Ghachok

Leave Pokhara after breakfast and drive for about two hours through beautiful countryside and terraced farms to Mardi Pul. Start the hike from Mardi Pul to Ghachok, a beautiful Gurung village surrounded by rolling hills and fields. The walk is easy and lasts about three to four hours. It shows us how people live in the countryside and how friendly they are. When we get there, set up camp and enjoy a quiet night with views of the nearby hills and the far-off snow-capped peaks.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 3

Trek from Ghachok to Dhiprang

As we walk from Ghachok to Dhiprang today, we go deeper into the Annapurna region. The path goes up slowly through terraced fields, thick forests, and small villages, giving us a chance to see both nature and culture. We might get to see locals working in their fields along the way, which will give you a taste of rural life as it used to be.

It takes about 5–6 hours to walk the trail at a steady pace, with chances to stop and enjoy the view. We will camp for the night in Dhiprang, a small, quiet village, and have dinner under the stars.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 4

Trek from Dhiprang to Chichemle Kharka

After breakfast, leave Dhiprang and follow a trail that goes up slowly and takes us higher into the alpine landscapes. The trail goes through thick rhododendron and oak forests that are full of birdsong and, in the spring, bright flowers. As we go up, we start to see more of the Annapurna range. Our hard work pays off with views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys below.

The walk of the day takes about 5 to 6 hours to get to Chichemle Kharka, a peaceful meadow area surrounded by trees that is great for camping. Get comfortable in the tented camp and enjoy the quiet mountain air.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 5

Trek from Chichemle Kharka to Khumai Danda

Today’s hike will take us from Chichemle Kharka further into the alpine zone, along forested paths that slowly open up to ridgelines with amazing views. As we go up, the plants start to thin out, and the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges, with their snow-covered peaks, take over the horizon.

The hike takes about 5 to 6 hours, and there are steady climbs and beautiful views along the way. When we get to Khumai Danda, a beautiful high ridge with views all around, we set up camp and watch the sun set over the Himalayas.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 6

Trek from Khumai Danda to Korchon

After breakfast, leave Khumai Danda and take a trail along the top of a ridge that gives us 360-degree views of the valleys and peaks around us. The path slowly rises, bringing us closer to the alpine zone, where there isn’t much vegetation and the land is rougher.

The hike, which takes 4 to 5 hours, is moderate but worth it because we get closer to Korchon, a beautiful high-altitude campsite with views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Mardi Himal. Spend the night in a tented camp, where the quiet mountain setting is perfect for resting and getting used to the new place.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 7

Exploration Day

Today is a day for exploring and getting used to the area in preparation for the climb to Mardi Himal Base Camp and beyond. We can take short hikes around Korchon to higher ridgelines to see Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Mardi Himal in all their glory. This will also give your body time to get used to the higher altitude. The guides will also help you rest, drink water, and go over your climbing gear to make sure everything is ready for the next part of the climb. Sleep in the tented camp under a clear sky in the Himalayas.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 8

Trek from Korchon to Mardi Himal Base Camp South

Leaving Korchon, the trail ascends steadily towards higher alpine terrain, with breathtaking panoramas accompanying us throughout the journey. The trek takes about 6 to 7 hours and goes over rough ridgelines and through high-altitude pastures before finally reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp South.

At this point, the scenery is mostly made up of steep cliffs, glaciers, and close-up views of Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Peak), which rise dramatically above everything else. When we get there, we settle into our tented camp and take some time to rest and get used to the altitude before the big climb. The night at base camp offers a true expedition feel under the vast Himalayan skies.

Day 9

Climb from Base Camp to High Camp

Today is hard but rewarding because we are climbing from Mardi Himal Base Camp South to High Camp at 5,120 meters. The climb requires steady effort and endurance as you navigate rocky terrain, patches of snow, and gradual ridgelines. The views get better and better over the course of 6–7 hours, with the tall peaks of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna South dominating the skyline. When we get to High Camp, we’ll be greeted by a breathtaking view of the Himalayas and the excitement of the climb to the top. Settle into the tented camp and rest early, preparing for the big ascent the following day.

Day 10

Summit to Mardi Himal 5553m and back to Base Camp

We begin the day early in the morning, usually around 2–3 AM, for the summit attempt of Mardi Himal Peak. Our experienced climbing team will help you use crampons, an ice axe, and ropes to get to the top, which involves climbing snowy ridges, steep slopes, and glaciated areas.
At 5,553 meters, the top of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks will give you stunning 360-degree views. This is an experience you will never forget. After you celebrate your success, take your time getting back down to Base Camp. Stop and rest and enjoy the views along the way. We can rest up after the hard day at the summit by staying overnight at Base Camp.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 11

Reserve Day for Climbing due to Bad weather

Today is a backup day in case the summit attempt is delayed by bad weather. We can use this day to relax, get used to the area, or look around the area around Mardi Himal Base Camp South. If the weather was bad before, this buffer makes sure we’re ready and safe for the climb. Drink plenty of water, enjoy the view, and check the climbing gear for the next summit. Staying overnight in a tented camp is safe and comfortable in the high-altitude environment.

Accomodation: Tented Camp
Day 12

Trek from Base Camp to Meshrom Kharka

After breakfast, start going down from Mardi Himal Base Camp to Meshrom Kharka. You’ll be retracing the high ridgelines and alpine meadows you passed on the way up. As you go, take in the views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna South, and think about how far you’ve come.
