Manaslu Hiking Map, Itinerary & cost – 10 Days
Trip Overview
Here’s an overview of what you can expect:
Best Season for Manaslu Hiking
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to do Manaslu hiking. These times of year have clear skies, stable weather, and comfortable temperatures, which make them the best times to go hiking.
In the spring, rhododendrons bloom and the trees are full of leaves. In the autumn, the air is crisp and the views of the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges are breathtaking. People usually avoid these months because winter can be very cold, especially at higher elevations, and the monsoon season makes trails muddy and prone to landslides.
What Makes Manaslu Hiking Special?
- Manaslu Hiking with Skyline Treks is special because it takes you through a restricted area (i.e. less frequented, more remote) where you can experience a mix of culture, beautiful mountain scenery, and traditional village life.
- You walk along the Budhi Gandaki River, through forests of rhododendron and oak, past old monasteries, and see peaks in the Himalayas like Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and others.
- The trek lasts 10 days, which makes it easy to get to, but it also has enough height and remote terrain to feel like a real Himalayan experience.
Manaslu hiking difficulty
The Manaslu trek is considered a challenging hike.
Here’s a breakdown of the difficulty factors:
- Altitude: The trek reaches an altitude of about 5,160 meters (16,930 feet) at Larkya La Pass. Altitude sickness can be a concern, so proper acclimatization is crucial.
- Terrain: The trail includes a variety of terrain, from lush subtropical forests to rocky paths and high-altitude glaciers. You’ll encounter steep ascents and descents.
- Weather: Weather conditions can be unpredictable, with cold temperatures at higher altitudes and potential snowfall, especially during the winter months.
- Duration: The trek typically takes around 14-18 days, which requires a good level of fitness and stamina.
- Remoteness: The Manaslu Circuit is less frequented than other popular treks, so amenities and facilities might be limited compared to more traveled routes.
If you’re looking for more details or help with planning, feel free to ask!
Permits Required for Manaslu Hiking
For this hiking, the following permits are required and are included:
- Manaslu Special Trekking Permit (Restricted Area Permit) for the Manaslu region.
- Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP).
- ACAP – Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, as parts of the route exit into that area.
- TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) Card.
Skyline Treks takes care of these for you, so you don’t have to worry about it all and just need to comfortably enjoy the trek.
Safety and Precautions
Safety is built into the package, but you need to be careful. Things to think about:
- Acclimatization: The route has days off or days to explore (like Samagaon or Samdo) to help you get used to the high pass.
- Good guide and porter support: Skyline provides licensed local guides and porters, along with their pay, insurance, and equipment.
- Proper lodging: Staying in lodges or tea houses is the right way to stay safe (rest, food, and shelter).
- Weather variability: Weather can change a lot, so be ready for cold, snow, and wind, especially at higher camps. In exposed areas, the sun and UV rays can be very strong.
- Emergency planning: Make sure your insurance covers trekking at high altitudes and have a plan for getting out.
Training and Preparation
To get the most out of this hike and lower the risk:
- Do cardio (long walks, hikes, running, or biking) for several weeks before to build up your stamina.
- Walk for a long time with a full daypack, preferably on hilly ground.
- To be able to go up and down hills, you need to strengthen your legs, back, and core.
- Get used to what being at a high altitude feels like. If you can, take shorter hikes above 3,000–4,000 m.
- Get ready mentally for remote areas, simpler places to stay, and fewer amenities.
Mountain Views
Along the way, you’ll see some amazing mountains, like Mount Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and more from high ridgelines and near Larkya Pass. On a clear day, the high pass (Larkya La) has some of the most beautiful views of the Alps, glaciers, snowfields, and jagged Himalayan peaks that rise above the skyline.
Altitude Sickness and Prevention
There is a real risk of altitude sickness because the trek goes up to more than 5,000 meters near Larkya La. Steps to prevent it:
- Slowly go up; the plan includes breaks for getting used to the altitude in Samagaon, Samdo, or places like that.
- Drink enough water and eat foods that are easy to digest and give you energy.
- Don’t push yourself too hard at the beginning of the hike; take it easy.
- Wear the right clothes (warm clothes, sun protection, and good boots).
- Check your symptoms: if you have a headache, feel tired, or feel sick, don’t ignore them, going down is safer.
- Carry altitude medication if prescribed.
What to Expect During Manaslu Hiking
Expect a short but tough hike. It starts in Kathmandu, then you have to drive or transfer a long way to the trailhead. From there, you hike through the villages of Budhi Gandaki valley (Machha Khola, Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Samagaon, Samdo, etc.), cross Larkya Pass (or a similar high pass), and then go back down to Dharapani. You stay in tea houses or lodges, and the food is typical of the area (Nepalese, local, and tea house food).
The land changes from forests and river valleys to drier, higher-altitude areas with rocky trails and snow and ice, depending on the season. There will be solid hiking hours (5–8 hours) every day, and some days will start early (especially when crossing a pass). The weather can change quickly, especially at higher altitudes.
Why Choose Skyline Treks for Manaslu Hiking
Skyline Treks offers this package, which includes all the important logistics like permits, lodging, food (B, L, D), guide and porter support, land transfers, and more. We know the Manaslu area well (it’s a restricted area), so we can easily deal with legal and permit issues.
Our guides are from the area and are licensed, which means they know the culture, can keep you safe, and are professional. They also take good care of you while you hike. This 10-day itinerary is also for people who don’t have a lot of time but still want to see the Manaslu region.
Things You Should Know
- Minimum group size: If you’re traveling alone, you might have to pair up with someone else. You need at least two people to go on the trek.
- You can get hot water, a heater, and charging, but they might cost extra at some lodges.
- Internet and mobile services work in most places, but they don’t always work in the higher, more remote areas.
- You need to bring your passport copies, visa, and other documents, but the permissions may depend on how long it takes to process them.
- Cash: Bring enough Nepali money because remote lodges won’t take cards. You’ll need a small change.
- Weather: The high pass is likely to be cold, and snow is possible outside of peak seasons. Landslides or trail blocks can happen from time to time.
Is Manaslu Hiking for Me?
Yes, this is a good hike for you if you are a moderately fit trekker who has done some trekking before, is willing to walk for 6 to 8 hours some days, and can handle higher altitudes. If you don’t have a lot of time but still want to see the Manaslu region, this is also a good option.
This could be very hard for you if you don’t like cold, remote places to stay, long days of hiking, or have health problems related to high altitudes (or have never hiked above 3,000 m before).
Meals & Accommodation
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included when you stay in lodges or tea houses while trekking. Lodges or tea houses are where you stay. They’re basic but comfortable. This package doesn’t let you camp in most places. Some lodges may have hot showers or heaters, but not all of them do.
Plan Your Manaslu Hiking
Here’s the rough plan:
- Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola
- Then: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Samagaon, Samdo, Dharmashala/Larkya Phedi, cross the pass, Bhimthang, and then drive back or something similar.
- Include getting used to things in Samagaon/Samdo.
- Add a buffer day for bad weather at the high pass.
- Confirm transportation from Kathmandu, lodging in Kathmandu pre- and post-trek.
- Make sure you have the right gear, permits, insurance, etc.
Why Choose Manaslu Hiking
Because it gives you a shorter version of what would be a much longer trip, with all the important cultural, scenic, and altitude highlights. You get to trek in a limited area, cross a big pass, and see the beauty of the Himalayas, but in a 10-day trip that is easier to fit into your schedule. Skyline Treks is a good choice for Manaslu because we have a good reputation, provide experienced local guides, and include all the permits and lodging with best services.

Kathmandu to Machha Khola (869m/2851ft) via Arughat (695m/2280ft) and Soti Khola (710m/2328ft) 7 - 9 hrs (L, D)
After breakfast, leave Kathmandu and take a beautiful drive through rolling hills and rural areas along the Trishuli and Budhi Gandaki rivers. The trip goes through Arughat and Soti Khola, where you can see terraced fields, waterfalls, and small farming villages.
We can continue by driving or walking from Soti Khola to Machha Khola, which is a charming riverside village that is the gateway to the Manaslu region. The trail and road conditions will determine which way we go. This day gives you your first taste of the warm hospitality and lush valleys of Nepal’s mid-hills.
Machha Khola- Jagat (1410m/4625 ft) 6-7 hrs. (B, L, D)
After breakfast, we start our hike along the Budhi Gandaki River. We’ll slowly climb through thick forests of rhododendron, bamboo, and oak, and pass small villages by the river. The trail has both flat and gently sloping parts, and it goes through terraced fields, suspension bridges, and farms where people live.
As we get closer to Jagat, the entrance to the Manaslu restricted area, we’ll see more traditional stone houses and monasteries that show how Tibetan culture has influenced the area. This day sets the tone for the trek by slowly getting you used to the high altitude while you enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings.
Jagat- Deng (1,804m/5,917ft) 5-6 hrs.(B, L, D)
After breakfast, keep walking along the Budhi Gandaki River. We’ll pass through small villages and thick forests. The path goes up slowly and gives us stunning views of terraced fields and old stone houses. We will walk past local monasteries and cross suspension bridges, getting a taste of the area’s rich cultural history.
The path is still quiet, with only a few trekkers, so we can enjoy the peace of the mid-Himalayan landscape. Deng is a small village surrounded by hills and forests. When we get there, we can relax and take in the beauty of nature before going to bed.
Deng- Lho via Namrung (2,630m/8,626ft) 6-7 hrs. (B, L, D)
After breakfast, we leave Deng and climb slowly through oak and rhododendron forests. The path goes through Namrung, a traditional village that shows off Tibetan culture with stone houses, mani walls, and prayer flags along the way.
The trek goes on and up toward Lho, a peaceful village on a hill that offers sweeping views of the valleys and snow-capped peaks in the distance. This day combines cultural experiences with a moderate increase in altitude to get your body ready for the higher elevations that are coming up.
Lho-Samagaon (3,530m/11,578ft) 6-7 hrs. (B, L, D)
After breakfast, we start our hike from Lho and slowly make our way up the beautiful Manaslu valley. The path goes through traditional Tibetan-style villages, mani walls, and monasteries, which gives you a better understanding of the culture. As we get closer to Samagaon, the highest settlement before the high pass, we’ll see beautiful views of Manaslu (8,163m) and the peaks, glaciers, and ridges around it.
This day will see a big increase in altitude, so we take your time, go at a comfortable pace, and enjoy the beautiful alpine scenery. Samagaon is a great place to get used to the altitude and get ready for the hard days ahead.
Samagaon - Samdo via Pungyen Gompa – Back to Samagaon: 5 - 6 hours exploration (B, L, D)
After breakfast, we will take a hike from Samagaon to Samdo. Along the way, we’ll go past the Pungyen Gompa, an old monastery that shows off the area’s Tibetan Buddhist heritage. The trail goes through the Manaslu massif, glaciers, and alpine landscapes. Along the way, we can meet local people and see how they live in traditional ways.
After visiting Samdo, we returned back to Samagaon for the night. This day lets you slowly get used to the high Himalayan region’s culture and natural beauty.
Trek from Samdo to Dharamsala (4460m/14629ft) 04 to 05hrs (B, L, D)
After breakfast, we start our hike from Samdo to Dharamsala, the high-altitude base camp for Larkya La Pass. The path goes up slowly, passing glacial moraines, high alpine meadows, and prayer flags that flutter in the wind. This gives you a real sense of the remote Himalayas.
This day of trekking is shorter to help you get used to the higher altitude before the hard pass crossing. Take in the peace and quiet of the high Himalayas while enjoying stunning views of Manaslu and the peaks around it.
Trek from Dharamshala to Larkya la pass ( 5106m/16930ft) overnight at Bhimtang (3700m/12201ft) 12km 08 to 09 hrs (B, L, D)
After a quick breakfast, we get ready for the hardest and most rewarding day of the trek, which is crossing the Larkya La Pass, the highest point on the Manaslu route. The path goes up through rocky moraine, snowfields, and glacial terrain, giving us breathtaking views of Manaslu, Ngadi Chuli, and Himalchuli.
For this trek we will need to walk at a steady pace, be careful where we step, and take breaks often to avoid getting tired or sick from the high altitude. After we cross the pass, we then start our descent toward Bimtang, a high alpine settlement. There, we can rest and recover from the long day while taking in the peaceful mountain scenery.
Bimthang - Dharapani [2300m/7544ft]: 5 - 6 hours (B, L, D)
Following the Budhi Gandaki River valley, we start the descent from Bimtang to Dharapani after breakfast. The trail goes down slowly through alpine meadows, forests, and traditional villages. Along the way, we’ll see beautiful scenery and meet people from different cultures.
We will walk past terraced fields, mani walls, and local homes along the way. This will give you a taste of life in the rural Himalayas. The descent isn’t too steep, so it’s a nice change of pace after the hard Larkya La crossing. When we get to Dharapani, you can relax in the lodge and think about all the great things you did on the trek at high altitudes.
Dharapani to Beshisahar and drive back to Kathmandu 07 to 09 hours (B)
After breakfast, we start the last leg of the trek by going down from Dharapani to Beshisahar. Along the way, we’ll pass through thick forests, trails by rivers, and small villages. When we get to Beshisahar, we get in a car and take the drive back to Kathmandu, taking in the beautiful views of rivers, hills, and terraced farms along the way.
This day marks the conclusion of your Manaslu Hiking adventure, allowing time to reflect on the breathtaking landscapes, cultural encounters, and personal achievements of the past ten days. We hope you enjoyed every minute of this amazing but difficult trip and made countless fond memories that will last with you for a lifetime.
